Reading Again Graúna revives the most important Brazilian comic book character of the 1970s. This documentary tells the story of this small bird – female, Black, and from Brazil’s Northeast – created by cartoonist Henfil to use humor to challenge social inequalities and the censorship imposed by the country’s military dictatorship. Through interviews with cartoonists, friends, family members, and experts, the story of Graúna and the characters Zeferino and Bode Orelana (who form the “Turma da Caatinga”) is reconstructed. With archival footage, Henfil reveals unknown aspects of his characters and helps us understand the importance of revisiting his stories.
